Skip the Raleigh's legendary pool and dive into a martini instead.
The
Scene
Until scientists invent a time machine, the bar at the Raleigh Hotel
will have to do. Visiting here is like stepping into the Miami Beach
of the 1940s. In recent years, while other hotels were outfitting their
lounges with funky, modern fixtures and decor, the Raleigh was meticulously
restoring its cozy bar to the original feeling of '40s glamour. Nowadays,
the bartender may have dreadlocks and a nose ring, but swing music still
plays softly and lights are kept romantically low.
The
Draw
The mosaic martini-glass design in the terrazzo floors is the first sign
that this place takes cocktails seriously. The martinis can be described
in one word: huge. If they were any bigger, you could do the backstroke
in them. They are eight ounces of perfection with plump, briny olives
and those elusive ice crystals you find only in the best-made martinis
